Mr. Fingerprints FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Mr. Fingerprints FAQ section! We aim to provide you with clear and thorough answers to your questions about Live Scan fingerprinting services. Whether you’re wondering what Live Scan is, what you need for your appointment, or the fees involved, you’ll find the information you need right here. Our goal is to ensure you have a smooth and informed experience with our services.

Live scan is an advanced fingerprinting technique that captures fingerprints electronically, without the use of ink. These electronic fingerprints are subsequently transmitted to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for analysis. The DOJ conducts a comprehensive review, comparing the submitted fingerprints against existing criminal history records.

Response times vary depending on the agency and the type of check: Fingerprints (DOJ) — approximately 3 days; Fingerprints (FBI) — approximately 5 days; Child Abuse Index Check — approximately 4–6 weeks. Time frames will be significantly longer if the applicant has a criminal history or if a fingerprint/Live Scan transmittal is rejected by the Department of Justice.
Live Scan is required for a variety of purposes including employment background checks (healthcare, education, government), licensing (notary, real estate, contractor, insurance), volunteering with children or vulnerable populations, IHSS (In-Home Supportive Services), immigration proceedings, and many more. The requesting agency will provide you with the specific form (8016 Live Scan Form) indicating the purpose.
You will need: (1) A completed Live Scan Request Form (8016) provided by your requesting agency — we cannot assist with filling out this form; (2) A valid government-issued photo ID such as a Driver’s License, State ID, Passport, or Military ID; (3) Payment for the rolling fee. Some agencies may require additional documentation, so check with your requesting agency beforehand.
Our rolling fee for Live Scan fingerprinting is charged per the service rendered. There are also government fees set by the California DOJ and/or FBI that are separate from our rolling fee. You can calculate the total government fees at mrfingerprints.com/calculate-fees/. The total cost depends on the type of background check required by your requesting agency.
You can check the status of your Live Scan submission at the California DOJ Applicant Status website: applicantstatus.doj.ca.gov. You will need your ATI number, which is printed on your copy of the Live Scan Request Form after your appointment. Results are typically available within 3–5 business days for DOJ checks.
The Live Scan Request Form (8016) must be provided by your requesting agency (employer, licensing board, school, etc.). We cannot provide this form on your behalf. You can visit our forms page at mrfingerprints.com/forms/ for guidance, or contact your requesting agency directly to obtain the correct form before your appointment.
We accept cash, credit cards, and debit cards. Payment is due at the time of service. Please note that government fees paid directly to the DOJ or FBI are separate from our rolling fee and must also be paid at the time of your appointment.
Both options are available! You can book an appointment online at mrfingerprints.com/book-your-appointment/ to reserve your preferred time slot, or you are welcome to walk in during our business hours (Monday–Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm). Walk-in clients are served on a first-come, first-served basis. Most appointments take 10–15 minutes.
Yes, in most cases you will need to be re-fingerprinted. Live Scan results are sent directly to the requesting agency and are not transferable between agencies. Each employer, licensing board, or organization requires its own submission. Additionally, if your previous Live Scan was for a different purpose or agency, a new submission is required.
If your fingerprints are rejected by the DOJ or FBI (typically due to poor print quality), we will re-roll your fingerprints at no additional charge. If electronic submission continues to fail after multiple attempts, the DOJ may require ink card fingerprinting (FD-258 Hard Cards) as an alternative. We offer ink card fingerprinting services as well.
The Live Scan Request Form (8016) is provided by your requesting agency. This could be your employer, a licensing board, a school, a volunteer organization, or a government agency. Contact the organization requiring your background check and ask for the completed Live Scan Request Form before coming to your appointment.
